Question by Sid: Can anyone suggest good books with comedy and action?
I have just read 3 books from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and I plan to read the fourth, but can anyone reccommend books that are similar or have a similar genre.
Thanks

Christopher Moore and Carl Hiaasen are both great authors whose books are loaded with comedy and action. Pax-C

I love those Percy Jackson novels!
Here are a few other titles to try.
if you liked the Greek myth tie-ins, these both sound terrfic.
Anatopsis
by Abouzeid, Chris (2006)
Review from Publisher’s Weekly.
Witches and warlocks and ancient Greek gods make appearances in this thoroughly enjoyable fantasy set on future Earth. Princess Anatopsis, known as Ana, is a typical soon-to-be-13-year-old witch who doesn’t want the life her mother is molding for her: that of a future queen. Ana would rather be a knight-errant, like her father, the best in the Guild. As her Bacchanalian exams draw near, Ana gets a new tutor, Mr. Pound. The Queen tells Ana, “I think you will find him quite… unique.” Abouzeid’s tightly crafted fantasy boasts a clever cast of characters. For example, readers meet Barnaby Georges, Ana’s classmate, the dim-witted yet loveable prince (and warlock) from the neighboring castle, as well as his faithful companion, Uno, a glib, wisecracking St. Bernard. As Ana and Barnaby prepare for their exams, exciting things happen, such as a field trip to Mount Olympus, but horrible things occur, too—such as what begins to happen to the prisoners in the dungeon. Is the creepy Mr. Pound, who claims to be a demigod, behind it all? The two heroes race to find the meaning of the “Os Divinitas,” part of a Greek prophecy involving the god Prometheus—which they believe holds the key to the mystery—before their exams. Another thread in this fast-paced tale involves a rebel army of mortal resistance fighters who hope Ana and Barnaby will help them end the senseless cruelty the Immortals have inflicted on them for centuries. A fresh and entertaining story. Ages 10-up. (Mar.)
Also give a try to this one–Diana Wynn Jones is a great writer.
The Game
by Jones, Diana Wynn (2007)
Publisher’s Weekly review:
Celestial intrigue and the nature of storytelling are just two of the strands woven together in Jones’s (the Chrestomanci books) inventive novella. Sent from her grandparents’ London home in disgrace, Hayley arrives in Ireland to stay with her aunts and cousins in their rambling castle home. The girl takes to her new life almost immediately, especially the thrilling game her cousins play, in which they venture into the mythosphere—a mysterious realm where they perform various tasks drawn from the worlds of fairytale, myth and legend. In the course of her own quests, Hayley discovers the truth about her own unearthly nature. She gets the chance to rescue her long-lost parents from dreadful fates, to which they’ve been condemned by domineering Uncle Jolyon, a power-hungry god thinly disguised as an unpleasant business man. Readers less familiar with classical mythology will be helped (and may well find their interest piqued) by a note at story’s end that clearly links the original Greco-Roman characters with their modern-day avatars. A sparkling treat. Ages 12-up. (Apr.)
Also for general (non-Greek) action/humor
Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman
Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements (boy wakes up invisible–but reads fairly realstic, if you know what I mean.)
Hope you can find some books you like.
Cheers,
Amy
PS I’ve heard there will be 5 Percy books so expect that next year sometime too.
First: T H White
The Sword in the Stone
The Once and Future King
Second: Jack Vance
Tales of the Dying Earth (4 book omnibus – adult content!)
Third: Piers Anthony
A Spell for Chameleon
The Source of Magic
(this series goes on forever, but later books are mediocre)
Fourth: Tolkien
The Hobbit
Hagrid
Go with Carl Hiaasen. Also, there’s a kids book that is a scream, Harris & Me, Gary Paulsen. Oh, and A Year Down Yonder, Richard Peck.

These people call themselves Midnighters. Each one has a different power that is strongest at midnight: Seer, Mindcaster, Acrobat, Polymath. For years the Midnighters and the dark creatures have shared the secret hour, uneasily avoiding one another. All that changes when the new girl with an unmistakable midnight aura appears at Bixby High School.
Jessica Day is not an outsider like the other Midnighters. She acts perfectly normal in every way. But it soon becomes clear that the dark creatures sense a hidden power in Jessica . . . and they’re determined to stop her before she can use it.
