Question by Brenda: HELP ME PICK MY SCIENCE CAREER PATH?
Basically, here are the options:

-Honours life science (more general)
-Biochemical science/biomedical
-Medical physics

I absolutely love science, but most of all I love chemistry, physics and math. I do like biology, but only in terms of diseases, etc.

I love physics but I’m not good with technology, and I don’t have all the prerequisites for going into that program, although I could always obtain the credits. On the midterms for physics, I only ended up getting a 67% average (this was 10% above average though).. so I don’t even know if I can handle more physics.

I wish I could go on taking all of the science courses, I don’t know what to do.

I also have to consider what will get me in a better position for graduate school. I plan on going into research most likely.

Can anyone please offer some suggestions?!

Since you seem to like diseases in biology you could become a medical microbiologist which deals with microorganisms and disease. In terms of chemistry, physics, and math — you could become a chemical engineer which only requires 4 years of school and involves all 3. If you like life science in general, maybe something related to animals interests you such as wildlife biology, zoology, or marine life biology. Whatever path you choose, your heading down the right road, you will graduate with a better starting pay and better options in science and math then someone who choose the liberal arts road. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Question by RandiVoo: T.S. Eliot and the Stream of Consciousness.. Help, please?
My term paper is “the style of stream of consciousness in the writings of T.S. Eliot”. Does anyone know the main environmental influences that led him to use that technique? Or not necessarily environmental, just what influences led him to use it? I’ve been looking through books and searching it all over the internet but everything was so broad and I couldn’t limit the topic. It’s giving me such a hard time and I havent even started yet!
I’d appreciate as much help as possible =)

Best answer:

Answer by groucho marxist
I think stream of consciousness isn’t really consciousness, since that is undefinable, but a stream of thought, either memories of events that are similar and form a chain of events, or a line of logic uninhibited by societal conditioning, or maybe both logic and memory. When we are creative we use the right side of our brain that is less conditioned and freer than the left side, and this is very common with of course doing art, like poetry. So I don’t think TS Eliot was doing anything different from other writers and poets. I think the way he wrote made it more apparent. I suspect it was an hallucinogenic, like grass, that showed him how to do this during the 60′s hippie subculture, which a lot of artist where using then.

Question by mobeks: got into UCLA neuroscience and Berkeley College of Chemistry. Please help me pick.?
This is for undergraduate programs at those colleges.

UCLA pros: I am strongly passionate about neuroscience, so this seems nearly perfect
con: Very far from where I live, (8 hours at least!)

Berkeley pros: It has greater, however slight, prestige.
It has the number 1 (or really really close) chemistry program in the world
It is fairly close, which means i can drive home and see my family every(other) weekend

Please explain why I should pick your suggestion. If you pick Berkeley, do you think that going there will allow me a better career in neuroscience(because I’m assuming I’ll be pretty well equipped chemistry or chemical biology-wise)
1 hour ago – 4 days left to answer.
Additional Details
Not going to Berkeley seems like a waste, especially because of how hard it is to get in there and get acquainted with such a prestigious environment(would provide me contacts, etc. which would be great for future careers)
I plan to go to medical school

Best answer:

Answer by Catarina
You are passionate about neuroscience, so you are more likely to be an outstanding star of the program at UCLA. Are you aiming for medical school or a PhD?

Distance from your family of origin should not be a primary factor since you will be growing and changing more than you can predict now in the first years of college.

Question by TyGib13: Anyone able to help me get arguments for my essay on materialism?
Paragraph 1.

Arguments about…

1) Concepts like God, the soul, consciousness, ultimate reality, spirit, etc. cannot beexplained in terms of the material, empirically verifiable world.

And

2) Things that cannot be explained in terms of the material, empirically verifiable world do not exist.

Best answer:

Answer by Don H
You need to study a bit of physics.

At the plank level the material, empirically verifiable world is what is looking like it doesn’t exist.

At least not outside of our perceptual conclusions.
