This was the 17th and 18th century intellectual movement related to the power of human reasoning and questioning. Governments were seeing the end of tyranny along with religious toleration for an individuals freedom of worship. Major players during this time were Montesquieu, Locke, Rousseau, and Voltaire. Jefferson used many of Locke’s ideas when Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

The original enlightenment thinkers took part in the salon movement in Paris prior to the French Revolution. These individuals are remembered as ‘philosophes’.
Out of their ideas came the concept of liberty, fraternity (comradeship) and equality.
They discussed such issues as ‘social contract’ and ‘separation of Church and State’.
Eventually they influenced philosophers in other parts – particularly England.
