Fullmetal Alchemist and FMA:B pretty much have entirely different storylines.
FMA was made in 2003/2004 when the manga was only a few volumes long, so they took some material from the manga that was out then and fit it into its own anime-original plot.
That series was concluded by the movie, FMA: The Conqueror of Shamballa.
FMA:B just came out last year and is following the manga’s plot(since the manga is now over a couple dozen volumes long and will be ending soon)
The first 13 episodes had some content that was in the first anime that had to be repeated, but there are some very significant differences in those too.
At about episode 14, the story will hit the point where the first anime completely broke off from the manga’s story and more characters will be introduced.
It’s best to try to not connect anything that you know from the first series to Brotherhood.
So many things like the gate, the way homunculi are created, etc are different in this series.
Quite a few homunculi are different too…and Dante doesn’t even exist in this series.
What do you think? Answer below!
Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood is closer to the manga while Fullmetal Alchemist is just the regular anime.
