Was it a butterfly? If it was it was not a cocoon, it was a chrysalis/pupa. Moths make a silk cocoon around them and then they change to pupa.

Got a pupa just now too… I thought the larva was dying coz it was brown. When I saw it a few hours later, it was a yellow-green cocoon… Too bad I never actually sat down to watch it or record the process in stop-motion… -_-
