Question by : Why do New-Agers prefer the term Spirituality to Religion?
Spirituality requires belief in “spirit,” while Religion only in community “ligaments,” or connections. Both require a leap of faith, and both are doctrinal. Whether your doctrine is a big man in the sky, or a world soul.

They think it makes them sound more modernly pious, like some angels who are going to save society.
To me it just sounds stupid when someone says “I’m spiritual, not religious”.

Well, one way to look at it is “religion” is belief in a power beyond what lay inside you, while “spirituality” — at its bare minimum — only requires what lay within oneself.
I agree, though: Both require a leap beyond bare physical existence. Could it be a fantasy? Maybe. But it makes me feel good — and in the end, isn’t that what matters?
why are you getting hung up on semantics? if you know they mean the same thing stfu. nobody likes a hair splitter.
new agers are your clean hippies. the ones who work and believe in living clean and such. but, they are still HIPPIES.
Religion tends to turn into dogma, with everyone following along like zombies just because those are the rules while New Age allows for growth and experimentation and challenging of old values.
Because Spirituality and religion is not the same. Religion is totally dependent on people believing everything they’re told. (Try not believing and see where you end up). And in the Spiritual world “believing” is to miss the point entirely. All Spirituality needs is to accept our Divinity. In fact one can only be Spiritual if you can think for yourself and that lets belief out. And Spirituality is what connects us all. While religion separates us.
Lastly, religion needs to proselytize…they need you to “believe.” I don’t care about that silliness. Because I know who we really are. God’s (a verb) children…without believing in the God myth.
Anyone who agrees or disagrees, makes no difference to me. Upset? Confused? Angry? So what?
