Question by ‘little’ book,open(Rev10): What would make anyone think ‘Mystery’ Babylon is a church, or Rome, or the RCC?
Babylon of old was a very specific dominion of the ancient world, its rise and fall are covered much in both the N.T. and the O.T..

As history repeats itself[Ecc1:9 & 3:15] so also will this ‘Mystery’ Babylon of the last days.

Babylon and the Empire of Rome are juxtaposed in so many ways it is deliberate.
How could one be confused with the other?

The 7 hills on which the woman sits[Rev17:9] are the [6+1] continents of the world.
America had[at one time] a military base on each.
Jesus is the most reliable resource out there, besides the Lord God, and they speak plainly[Dt27:8, Nu12:8, Hbk2:2, Pro8:9]. They never refer to Babylon as Rome, are They not reliable?
At the no so tremendous – the bible CLEARLY says the end of the world is at the end of Revelation20:11:15 right after the 1000 year reign of Christ. Repeat someone else’s stupidity shows your lack of depth of knowledge on the subject. Have fun being oblivious!

Will you starve to death today for everlasting life?
For a morsel of bread sell your soul to the everlasting lake of fire?
Tremendoid – I’d rather you find truth in the subject

Mt24:36 But of that DAY and HOUR knoweth no man… What DAY and what HOUR? Christ is not speaking of the end of the world but of the DAY and the HOUR of His coming[v.27] to reign for 1000 years at the end of the age of sin and tribulation which lasts for 6000 years as stated in the Revelation of Jesus Christ chapter 20 and as there is no deceit from the mouth of Christ so then Christ is speaking only of the DAY and the HOUR of His return that cannot be known by anyone until it happens and this is truth. As for the other ‘times’[hrs, days, weeks, years] of the end are they not clearly explained to us by Christ Himself in The Revelation?

And there is what men think verses what God says. God calls Babylon a ‘nation’ a ‘land’, NEVER a church!
Oh! and I would recall the t’sd I gave too as the additional comments by you lead to a greater understanding on your part

this ‘supposed Christian’ – not at all uncalled for…
ESPECIALLY if you desire to show yourself a complete hypocrite

  1. the prophesied future Babylon is often thought to be a nation, an empire, or an organization… or even a person, or an ideal.
I often wonder if it will be something totally unexpected and unpredictable. As often it has been, especially with prophecies coming true in the Bible.
A bit like how stupid all the “end of the world” predictions are, by supposed christians – when it’s very obvious and also clearly stated in the Bible that nobody will know when it will happen.

In the end, it doesn’t matter. It’s not as if worrying about it is going to make it happen any faster, or prolong the wait. It’s not even going to help you live a life where you can truly serve others.
All that matters is that God knows exactly what he’s doing, so I’m just gonna live my life according to him and forget all this pointless and impractical worry about end time prophecies.

“36 But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Then tell me what that passage means.
I intend to live each day as if it were my last.
I will strive to serve others and walk humbly with God for as long as I can, right up until that last day. Even if I stumble, and make mistake, which I inevitably will, I won’t give up. Will you?
I find your last remarks quite frankly uncalled for.

  2. the Catholic churches veneration of Mary is what is often mistaken for the whore of babylon

this an incorrect thought even if the veneration of Mary is wrong

  3. the book of revelations is a book of symbolism. the old babylonian empire was just a type or shadow of how evil the last world empire would be.

the bible only prophecies of 4 world empires(babylon, meda-persia, greece, and rome)

rome is the last world empire that rules over all the world or kings of the earth. rome is the 4th and final “seat of satan” which is why you see lightning striking the vatican(on a clear day). the bible testifies that satan is manifested as lightning

mystery babylon can’t be anything but one of the 4 world empires

p.s. the roman catholic church is nothing but the false babylonian religion in disguise(the wolves in sheeps clothing)

  4. It’s Anti-Catholic propaganda. The truth is when St. John the Evangelist was imprisoned on the Island of Patmos which at the time was under the Roman Empire he was cryptic in his writings when he wrote the Apocalypse or Book of Revelation in fear that his jailers would discover what he wrote about the Roman Empire who at the time were persecuting the Christians. The Roman Empire which was under the rule of the Pagan Emperors that persecuted the Christians in which many Christians were martyred were very Anti-Catholic themselves. It was the Christians that called their Church “Catholic” the word appears in the writings of Church Fathers like St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Polycarp during the 2nd century. Babylon in St. John the Evangelist’s Book of Revelation was the Roman Empire during the time of the Christian persecutions not the Catholic Church. The Christian persecutions didn’t end until the 4th century under the rule of Emperor Constantine the Great. The Beast from the Book of Revelation is Emperor Nero his number is 666 for he began the Christian persecutions. The seven heads of the Beast are the seven kingdoms that were under the Roman Empire. And the Ten Crowns are the Ten Roman Emperors that during their rule were the worst persecuting the Christians.

If anything these Fundamentalist that persecute Catholics would be the whore of Babylon because Christians do not persecute others for their beliefs, hatred is the way of Satan. If anything the Catholic Church would be the church in St. John the Evangelist’s Book of Revelation would be the one that is persecuted.

  5. I suppose someone might think they are reading it from reliable sources…

like those with domain names like “”

edit; WOW!! I commend you to (((The devil’s Bane))) who’s answer is leaps and bounds above mine as far as serious apologetics go.. I’m impressed :-)

  6. Babylon was the culprit to Daniel and the captive Jews . Now the culprit is Capitalism . For everyone is suppose to share everything if he plans on finding SALVATION .

  7. No, Mystery Babylon was Jerusalem and the Temple System.

The seven hills of Jerusalem All within the third wall

    1. Mount Gared
    2. Mount Goath
    3. Mount Arca
    4. Mount Zion
    5. Mount Ophal,
    6. Mount Moriah
    7. Mount Bezetha

  8. I’m convinced that the whore of Babylon is Rome and the false religious system. There are clues throughout the chapter:

Verses 1 and 2 say, “Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”
Ever notice how many of the world leaders go to the Roman catholic church for a blessing from the pope? Notice how the Roman catholic church influences both politics and religion?

Verse 4 says, “The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication” –

Verse 6 says, “I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.”
Rome was known for it’s severe persecution of the early Christian church…feeding them to lions, burning them alive, etc.

Verse 9 says, “Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits.”
Isn’t Rome known as the city of seven hills or seven mountains?

Verse 15 says, “Then he said to me, “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.”
As mentioned before, does not the Roman Catholic church have worldwide political and religious influence?

“And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.”” Revelation 17:18.
The only city that was reigning over the kings of the earth at the time John recieved the Revelation was ROME.

  9. “Little” your rambling, nonsensical question and rude, condescending comments don’t inspire much confidence, I’m afraid. Your claim to understand the book of Revelation is undercut by your completely speculative interpretation of Babylon as America and the seven hills as seven continents that have housed US military bases. This is nothing more than baseless guesswork and demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the message of Revelation.

Revelation is very clear about the identity of “mystery Babylon” in chapter 17. This is a title of the woman who sits on the beast:

There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns… The name written on her forehead was a mystery: Babylon the great (Rev 17: 3-5)

This woman is later identified as: the great city that rules over the kings of the earth (v18). There was only one great city that ruled the earth in John’s day and that was Rome. The identification of the beast’s seven heads as ‘seven hills on which the woman sits’ (v9) utilizes a popular description of Rome in the ancient world (the city that sits on seven hills) that would have been unmistakable to John’s readers. You might also ask, which city or empire was ‘drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus’? Judging from John’s own experience as a political exile on Patmos and the experience of some of the cities he writes to, the answer is clearly the Roman empire and the local authorities who carried out its wishes. Furthermore, we are told that the seven heads also represent seven “kings”. At the time of writing, five had already fallen and one was currently reigning (v10). This can only refer to a succession of Roman emperors that is almost complete, while the very next verse contains an obvious reference to the Nero redivivus myth that was popular and widespread in the latter half of the first century CE.

To summarize, the title ‘mystery Babylon’ is a thinly veiled cipher for the city and empire of Rome in John’s day. John probably calls Rome Babylon because it was the only other empire to have destroyed Jerusalem – hence the conclusion of the book where John sees a “new” Jerusalem descending from heaven. John has no long term expectation of a delayed parousia – he expects Jesus to return imminently. This is mentioned in the very first verses of the book and is repeated over and over for emphasis in its last chapter. Revelation is therefore a failed prophecy – it was hundreds of years before Rome eventually fell, the world didn’t end, and Jesus did not return. But whatever your interpretation of Revelation, to ridicule fellow Christians as stupid, hypocritical, and in danger of eternal punishment simply because they have different viewpoints to your own is vile, arrogant, and unchristian in the extreme.
