Question by Claudia Amaranth: What is the reason behind alchemists (from Fullmetal Alchemist) having certain abilities?
Mustang, for example, uses fire – all the time, and nothing else. Is this because it is his only ability as an alchemist? Also, Fletcher Tringham uses his alchemy, but it only generated trees, plants and other vegetation. It is somewhat remiscient of pokemon, how charmander is a fire-type, and bulbasaur is grass-type.
Can Mustang use his alchemy to do something unrelated to fire
When it comes to the alchemists in FMA, are their powers “typed” if so, why?

an alchemist means…….. person with a high knowledge of chemicals and do lots of crazy stuff by mixing them………like creating different powers…
so when you mix it with certain things (fire, water etc.) elements………..you get different powers….
Alchemists specialize in types because they become more effective and efficient that way. There is soooo much to learn involving alchemey, that it is often better to excel in one area than it is to be a novice in a whole bunch of different areas.
A fair comparison would be to look at Martial Artists. There are many different kinds of Martial Arts, from kickboxing to sumo wrestling, but most people specialize in one area.
So sure Mustang COULD use other alchemey, but he probably isn’t very good at it. A long the same vain, sure a Kendo Master COULD sumo wrestle, but he’d probably fail miserably at it.
In Alchemy (full metal alchemist) nothing is alike… They had their both specialty… For example If I am good at fire im not good at water something…
alchemy is the study of composition. So in that, imagine alchemy like school. There are certian subjects a person is perfect at, but some subjects that seem to end up in the D or F grades. Alchemists tend to pick an area of study such as combustion or biology and learn every aspect of it.
So it’s not about types, but what people are willing to study. The show FMA is based off of some fact in alchemy (or what was believed that would happen) in the 1600’s to the 1800’s. The FMA world is just based on what would have happened if the alchemic equations are actually true and the composition of any object can be organized into something else, like a chemical equation. After I took Chemistry in H.S., I found many hidden similarities between the alchemy unit (changing the appearance of certain substances) and the show itself.
pretty neat, right?
