What counts as a Mystic? That’s a very broad term.
I believe that what is usually called the soul is not permanent, not eternal, and not unitary. This is basic Buddhism. I also believe that there is a fundamentally pure nature of mind, discerned only through pursuit of emptiness free from extremes, that is naturally luminous and clear, and the basis of compassion.
Along the path to discover these things there are innumerable positions and identity hurdles to overcome, most of which are just handy little labels that we need for security and support to get to the next set. There are many who are interested in helping us, but to accept that help requires some discernment of motive and method. Keep yourself focused on the goal, and endure through struggles, and above all keep growing, keep heading in the direction of growth, staying true to what you understand to be best for you (even if it involves some sacrifices that may be painful) and you will be just fine in the end.
And when you die, if you end up having to die that is, which is most likely but you never know – remember that you’re not leaving home, you’re returning home. Even if it seems a little bit gigantic and scary at first. Every part of the path that you’ve ignored or not been able to reach will confront you all at once. Accept it as the result of what you’ve accomplished, and face forward with courage.
What else can we do but face our deaths directly?
If one dives deep into Christian spirituality the body and soul really are one – thus the creed of the resurrection of the body, with some beautiful thoughts given in 1 Cor 15. Thus we should look at the soul as the post-material manifestation of who we truly are.
Spirit has many definitions. I find it quite unnecessary to introduce it, if one has a concept of mind ( = mental formation, part of the biological process) and soul ( = that part of human nature within us that is different from the material dimension). Some people/translations use spirit instead of soul. That is fine too.
Peace and Stillness,
Tom
I call myself a mystic because my ‘religious’…spiritual experience of the Divine cannot be easily defined or explained. I can write and talk about what it’s like for me, but it’s a poor substitute for the ‘real thing’…a direct connection between my soul and the Oversoul. Spirit and soul have often been interchanged; there are few differences, but here’s my thumbnail: a soul inhabits a human body, animating it and giving it purpose in the physical, but connects through the spirit to all of the universe, and each other.
I am.
(Is good enough for me. All i need to Know).
