Question by nikosmommy28: Pretend that you are in a discussion with friends and the topic is hard sciences versus soft sciences. It is?
argued that psychology is not a true science at all, as are sciences like chemistry and physics. How would you defend the proposition that psychology is a true science?

Best answer:

Answer by PooPooLaTrash
Psychology is a social science. Chemisty and physics are natural sciences.

To answer you, they are all sciences, but approached and studied differently. The natural sciences are based on experimental, quantifiable data or the scientific method and focus on accuracy and objectivity, where the social sciences are rooted in methodology and theory. Just because something isn’t a natural science doesn’t mean it isn’t a science, it’s merely a different type. Apples and oranges.

State Management versus Superstition

State management is one of the most powerful NLP techniques. Often, it can and is used to manage the state of others, but my view is that the first step should always be in managing your own state – changing yourself first. Many techniques and approaches are available, but here I want to discuss one that has been personally relevant, and was in the news this summer as Wimbledon drew to a close. On the Today programme, there was an interview with a sports psychologist, discussing the fact that Andy Murrey’s coach insisted that he used the same practice court for a forthcoming match as he had for the last one he won, and that Andy uses the same ball after he has won a point. Other tennis players have similar processes that they follow – Serena Williams is quoted as saying that she didn’t play well in the French Open because “I didn’t tie my laces right and I didn’t bounce the ball five times and I didn’t bring my shower sandals to the court with me. I didn’t have my extra dress. I just knew it was fate; it wasn’t going to happen.”
Managing your state through making environmental changes has its use. My recent personal experience is re-designing my office – having moving into it about 10 months ago, I finally got around to repainting it from a dark, rich red to a light blue and yellow, opened up the window recess, and ripped up the carpet to expose light floorboards. This has helped me, as it’s now a very open, fresh place to be, as opposed to a forbidding, dark, and actually rather depressing place. However, a note of caution needs to be sounded here, and it’s about identifying the boundary between using simple external factors that can create a helpful state, and superstition. The critical element to using state management effectively is that the factors that you use to help you must be within your control. If, for example, my office needed to have sum flooding in in order to create my positive atmosphere, whilst it would work at the moment, come winter, I could be in trouble. If the external factor becomes too powerful, and moves from being an aid to help manage your state into being an absolutely necessary requirement, it has become too powerful. At that point, you are allowing your state to be managed for you, by tennis balls, sunshine, sandals, or whatever you have chosen.
The most useful resources to help you manage your own state are ones that you always have with you – in your mind. These cannot be forgotten or left behind, they are in your  control, and you are in charge of them. Next time you are thinking about putting on your lucky underpants, challenge the fact that the underpants actually do anything for you at all. At best, they might create a positive mental state, but simply ask the question – “do I really need underpants to do that?” You clearly already have the capacity to manage your own state – just remove the meaningless crutch that you have attached that state to, and use the power you already have inside yourself.

I Told You That Your Home Based Business would Fail

In this day and age, with the economy the way it is, many, many more people are turning to the internet and home based businesses as a way to earn extra income and possibly kiss their day job goodbye.
This can, and does happen every day.
As good as it sounds, there are people around us whom thought would support us.
But they don’t see it the way we do and this can discourage us to the point of quitting just short of success.
The way to conquer this is to always hold onto our dreams.

Equality and Diversity Training

In any setting, consumers would always expect quality service in order to be satisfied. And as a provider, you would always want the satisfaction of your consumers guaranteed. Once consumers were delighted with the services that were provided by the company, no doubt they would come back for more and even tag along other companions. So, the big question is, how can you assure service excellence to your clients? Thus, equality and diversity training pops out in the picture.

Planning versus Pressure

As a big fan of the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator), I tend to both consciously and subconsciously filter much of what I experience through the four dichotomies, as a potential means for understanding behaviours, and as a challenge to some of the underlying principles behind the model. The dichotomy that has been at the forefront of my mind recently has been the “J-P” (Judging – Perceiving) one, that essentially looks at how things get done.

Authentic Communication

Training in communication skills tends to cover voice tonality and modulation, body language, the words used, props (visual aids and so on), eye contact, interaction with the audience, understanding your audience, and so on. We buy into all of these and more, as tips and techniques, but I was reminded this morning of the single biggest driver of great communication – being authentic.

Matt Latourelle excels in his presentation of the Christian views of devout CS Lewis of Chronicles of Narnia fame in distinction to the highly inclusivistic, even gnostic views of John Hick with his idea that all are on their way working towards salvation, whatever their religion. A must see! I think Latourelle makes his case that Hick is not a Christian in the classic, orthodox and standard way most understand this term.
