Question by Bluey: Name of short story about an unconventional teacher?
She appears as a substitute one day. Teaches kids weird things such as 2+2 isn’t necessarily 4, the pyramids have mystic powers, and that women can enchant men but not the other way around. And one day she is gone because she is fired. The protagonist is a student that is intrigued with her and wonders where she went. The other students were like “she’s nuts.”

I thought the name of the story was “The Griffin” or something, but I couldn’t find it under that.

Best answer:

Answer by charming
“Gryphon” by Charles Baxter. The substitute teacher is Miss Ferenczi.

Question by dizzy: How to convince my parents to let me be a teacher?
Title says it all.

I have thought about becoming a high school science teacher as an option over a doctor or biomedical engineer. I have such a passion for science, and I want a job where I can use my knowledge in the service for others, and help many different backgrounds. It’s really funny actually, I didn’t even notice the option of a teacher til recently, and it’s been in front of me the whole time.

I love both biology and chemistry, but I’d figured there would be more demand for chemistry than biology.

But I have also heard other things, such as the economy being bad, bad salary, outlook not good. Money is not really an issue for me.

Also, if I had to work for a high school, I would choose my high school at the moment. Is there any bias towards applicants who are applying to the school they graduated from?

I also thought about bringing other options, such as working on the Science Research Club (where I am officer of), or maybe a Neuroscience Club. If I didn’t pursue teaching, I’d major in Neuroscience.

Problem is, my parents really don’t really seem to think it’s a good option. My mom IS a tiger mom, she wants me to be a doctor, and I do remember my dad asking me if I did consider becoming a science teacher, but that was a while ago. My mom was angry and upset when she found out I really wasn’t sure that I wanted to be a doctor anymore..

I told my older brother about this, and he told me not to do it.

Any tips?

Answer by Brendon
well firstly you probably wont be able to choose what school you want to work at. It will probably be very random because you shouldn’t be very picky about finding a teaching job because they are VERY hard to come by.

If you want to be a teacher go for it, when you’re 18 your parents really have no say in what you do or say, you dont need to convince anyone besides yourself if thats what you truly want to do.

Question by Ms.ELii: I need a teacher to help me in Wicca. Any willing or anyone with ideas where I can find a teacher?
I’ve been attracted to Wicca for a while, the freedom of the religion and the focus of nature it has. But I am just starting to actually be a Wiccan. I don’t know where to start. Can I just start saying the spells as directed, or is there a way to do it? Do I have to be initiated into the religion before I practice it? I’m so confuse, and was wondering if there was someone to help…

You can take guidance from the Wiccan Society.

www.siddhayatan.org http www.siddhalishree.com (blog) Transcription Why do you wear white? Colors affect your life. Different countries and regions assign different attributes to colors. In America wearing black is a sign of power. In India it is the opposite. These ideas are man-made but color affects you regardless. If you wear red your energy will increase. If you are depressed wear white because it brings peace. If you want to attract money wear black or green. Wear emerald set in gold and you will attract money. Wearing this however, is not enough. You have to put effort to create money. Color attracts and heals many things. The best color for peace is white. That is why I have chosen this color. It is soothing and symbolic. It brings peace in the world. I want to bring peace, truth and light to the world. People have the right to know the truth about God and also themselves. Choose to learn the right way in order to always be in peace. One day you might choose to also wear white. And where did God come from? I tell you that all beliefs are false because your belief today might change tomorrow. One day all beliefs might be gone. The belief is that God created this world and the universe but then the question arises that “who created God?” This is only our belief. If we exist, God exists. Go back 5000 years and you will find that people did not have a concept of God. They worshipped trees, stars, moon and the sun. No ancient text mentions God. So the real question to

Question by David F: My wife is a new science teacher, physics in high school. What does she need?
My wife is at school right now and I want to surprise her when she gets home with a bunch of stuff she will need. I need a good list of things she will need. 10 points to the person who answers the fastest with a GOOD list.

In a nice “carry all” bag she can take to school:

colored index cards; file folders; magic markers; highlighters; colored pens for white boards; paper clips; scotch tape; breath mints; individually wrapped hard candies; “organizer”-type notebooks (they used to call them Trapper Keepers); small plastic storage boxes; and a pretty little knick-knack to place on her desk that will remind her of you and your thoughtfulness — no family pics (sadly — sigh — for security purposes). As a bonus, a nice Gift Certificate for a “night out” for dinner!

Teacher, Does Stress Morph You into a Monster?

Edit Article |

Posted: Sep 02, 2010 |

We need to spring back to a stable identity, with a stable inner referent that makes us feel comfortable and safe. For example, a schoolteacher, over the summer, might have a chance to spend a lot of time alone, just reading, walking through the woods, enjoying their own company, perhaps even painting a picture. By simply enjoying them self, they feel more genuine and comfortable inside and out. However, then they need to return to teaching school in the fall. Over a course of the following school year, by the time the next May or June comes along, they can hardly recognize them self anymore (again). The real work that they did on themself in the summer, returning to their internal referent to heal is gone. They feel as if they have their feet to the fire for nine months of the school year. Again, they can hardly wait to have time by themself and to get to know them self again. watch this about teacher stress http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/educational_and_howto/watch/v17489191ySYcHbHw

However, each time they get to know them self again, they are not them self anymore. They have not gone back to their comfortable baseline reality often enough.  Becoming changed by stress causes teachers to “morph” into another way of being alive to withstand the rigorous demands of today’s modern society. The burn out ratein education is so high that anything we can to prevent it will benefit many.

What is true for a schoolteacher is also true for a healer or anyone in the helping professions. However, anyone who is a meditator should work toward developing a steady, sincere relationship with higher being that needs to be returned to daily. Better yet, twice a day. A meditator who is in retreat will do that six times a day. Enlightened beings never leave the internal referent.

We then draw on the work of Hansen, Mislevy, and their colleagues (Hansen and Steinberg, 2004; Hansen et al., 2003; Mislevy et al., 2002, 2003) to provide a very basic introduction to the development of an inference-based validation argument.

Research on Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English

We begin with an analysis of the target and ancillary skills required to respond to NAEP reading and mathematics items. The Power That Karma Holds Over Us!

You know, our egos have their own way of interpreting events. We are already suffering because inappropriate ego prevents us from perceiving the way things exist in reality. In addition, perhaps we do not respect ourselves enough to challenge this ego-based method of dealing with external and internal phenomena.

The Muse of the Arts and the Great Dakini of Tantric Buddhism

The powerful, creative energy of the muse of poetry, painting, and other arts is thought by others to be a mythical personification of the spirit of creativity in beautiful and seductive female form, but not to the experiencer. Many artists entice and worship the muse who holds the key to their success. There definitely are signs that this is equal to the female creative energy of higher tantric practices called dakini.
