Short . . .
They are two different series, not two seasons

Long . . .
Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are two different series.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) was written in the time that the manga was being released. After about 25 episodes, the show quickly caught up with the manga, but the creator of the manga, Hiromu Arakawa didn’t want fillers so they continued the show, making up a different storyline to the original. In FMA, the movie: Conqueror of Shamballa directly follows the anime and is the real end to the tale.

The OVAs are:
– Chibi Party
– Kids
– Liveaction
– Alchemists vs. Homunculi
– Reflections

After the manga was finished, they created a new anime (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, made in 2009), closely following the original storyline. They made the first fifteen episodes have a fast pace, with a lot going on in them, seeing as they had already been done in the first 25 episodes in FMA (2003), but after that the story changes dramatically.

You can watch the OVAs, but they’re not part of the actual story. They are:
– The Blind Alchemist
– Simple People
– The Chronicle of Teacher/Tales of the Master
– Yet Another Man’s Battlefield

There are new characters, and some other characters are taken away.
There is a whole new plot too
The intentions of the homunculus are different.
There are different main villains
I could go on . . . but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

There is also an upcoming movie out in 2012 in America, licensed by Funimation for FMA:B. It’s already out in Japan. The Sacred Star of Milos (movie title) is set during the time when Edward realized Alphonse’s human body existed somewhere, with the logic that that knowledge would encourage him to travel to another area to do research. It doesn’t really have any impact on the actual story.

Question by NovaApocalypse: Full Metal Alchemist and Brotherhood Help?
What’s the difference between the 2? Is brotherhood like the 2nd season of Full Metal Alchemist? Or are they completely different?

Best answer:

Answer by ~Amaya~
They are both different. The first one follows the manga for a little bit, but then develops its own plot and brotherhood follows the manga completely. The 2 series are unrelated.

Episode 40 of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is basically equivelent to Chapter 74 and 75, so if you are going to continue through the manga, then read from Chapter 76.

Question by Henry Urban: Is there a place to buy King Bradley’s sword from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood?
The sword King Bradley, AKA Wrath, uses towards the end of the Brotherhood series of Fullmetal Alchemist, is there a place to buy it?

Best answer:

Answer by FrostbiteO7
I’ve been searching about this for you, on and off, for days! It seems nearly impossible to find one of these fore sale online.I just don’t think there’s anyone out there making them for a profit. However I found a person who made a wooden sword version (not for sale) and it seems doable if your handy. Here’s a picture of the final product: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/526382/

I also searched ebay for swords in general, and found one that resembles Bradley’s a lot: http://cgi.ebay.com/US-M1860-LIGHT-CAVALRY-SABER-Civil-War-Sword-Sabre-/360297895587?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e36d96a3

or to go half-way, what if you buy a wooden sword, and then added the hilt/handle attachment (sorry, i’m not familiar with sword terms) yourself, and then paint it the appropriate colors? If you’re interested, here’s the ebay search for wooden swords: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=wooden+sword&_sacat=0&_odkw=sword&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
And here’s a picture with details of the scabbard, hilt, and pommel (I looked up some words for describing swords, haha) for reference: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/169/0/5/Scabbard_detail_by_sethbramwell.jpg

Sorry that i couldn’t find a definite product for you, I looked but to no avail! I hope these alternate ideas can help you!

Question by Stargirl: Fate/Stay Night and Fate Zero, Fullmetal alchemist and Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood?
Do I have to watch Fate stay night before Zero or can I skip Fate stay night and jump straight to Fate Zero?

Same question with fullmetal, do I have to watch fullmetal alchemist to understand Brotherhood?

Best answer:

Answer by Mandy
Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night, and they do have a few characters in common, but the great majority of the cast in F/Z is different from F/SN, and the stories are pretty separate and self-contained for the most part. So no, you don’t really need to have seen F/SN to understand F/Z, and since F/Z is vastly superior to F/SN in pretty much every way, I definitely recommend just skipping right to F/Z.

FMA: Brotherhood is a completely separate adaptation of the series, sticking much closer to the manga than the first series did. It starts the story over at the very beginning, so no, there is absolutely no need to watch the first FMA series to understand FMA: Brotherhood.

Question by Dani: Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood continuation?
Well I first watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist and Conqueror of Shambala. I loved the series and decided to watch brotherhood to quench my thirst for more FMA. I finished Brotherhood within a week and thought it was incredible. I was wondering, considering the ending to the series is or are they planning on making a continuation for brotherhood? they seemed to have set it all up for a perfect sequel. Or is there anything else left to watch at all?

Best answer:

Answer by Brittany
there is a movie continuation of FMA:B called the Sacred Star of Milos, if you haven’t seen that yet.
