Motivation to Lose Weight * Weight Loss Tips for Losing Weight Fast * What an honor, what a joy, so much peace… peace, like a deep pool Jump into the river of life— let it take you! Have you not paddled upstream long enough? Are your bones not weary from the resistance of what truly is? Yes, my friend— the river of life flows down. Your holy task is to release the oars, and let life take you! Enjoy the journey— smile when it’s impossible; be the light of life! Yes, look at the beauty all around [Upstream] is the way that our society would tell us to go: “Don’t be biological, don’t be spiritual! Buy things! Seek for your happiness outside of yourself! If you just keep going you will find it!” And yet, it always eludes us— when we chase after that which is outside of ourselves… But the mystic turns around [from society's wishes], releases the oars, and lets life take him, without fear— with a childlike glee, to see: what does the universe have in store for me? Yes, the mystical journey is an inward one. Reading about opinions, facts and knowledge is fun. But I believe that at this time you are saturated with the tools that you need, and now courage and faith are the only tools that you need for the remainder of this journey. Release the oars! Flow with life! Develop your own experience, and live in that truth forever… Remember, the kingdom of heaven is within you. Peace be with you, my friends— Peace be with you. OM Love, Dan .

Brain tumor is one an abnormal mass of tissue in which cells grow and multiply, seemingly unchecked by the mechanisms that control normal cells. Medical tourism in India is a boon for abroad patients who are searching for cost effective brain tumor surgery in India operated by the best Brain surgeons. Brain tumor surgery in India is done for primary as well as secondary tumors India is one of the most desirable places to get your Brain tumor surgery. Many of India’s surgery hospitals and clinics offer international-standard brain tumor surgery in India at local prices, no waiting list and a high quality holiday. India is a land of art and culture and it is always seemed that abroad people are always attracted to it because of its variety

Brain tumors are tumors that grow in the brain. A tumor is an abnormal growth caused by cells reproducing themselves in an uncontrolled manner. Primary brain tumors occur in people of all ages. Metastatic brain tumors are much more common in adults. Tumors that start in the brain are primary brain tumors and tumors formed by cancer cells that start elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain are Metastatic brain tumors. Treatment of a brain tumor is different from treatment of tumors in other parts of the body. Depending upon the part of brain in which tumor occurs, tumor are classified, and accordingly the tumor is treated. The brain is very sensitive part of human body, thus brain tumor is treated by the most experienced cancer surgeons. Symptoms of brain tumors may depend on two factors: tumor size and tumor location. The cause of primary brain tumors is unknown. The time point of symptom onset in the course of disease correlates in many cases with the nature of the tumor (“benign”, i.e. slow-growing/late symptom onset, or malignant, fast growing/early symptom onset). Many low-grade (benign) tumors can remain asymptomatic (symptom-free) for years and they may accidentally be discovered by imaging exams for unrelated reasons (such as a minor trauma). New onset of epilepsy is a frequent reason for seeking medical attention in brain tumor cases. If tumor is identified at its early stage then it can be easily vanished but if it remain unidentified then it becomes difficult to be cured. Large tumors or tumors with extensive perifocal swelling edema inevitably lead to elevated intracranial pressure (intracranial hypertension), which translates clinically into headaches, vomiting (sometimes without nausea), altered state of consciousness (somnolence, coma), papilledema (prominent optic disc at the funduscopic examination). However, even small tumors obstructing the passage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may cause early signs of increased intracranial pressure. The brain tumor surgery is very sensitive surgery so it becomes must for patients to select best destination for brain tumor surgery so that there should not be any complications after surgery.

Every patient wants to know about their disease and its treatment and want to ask each and every thing possible, but if you have diagnosed the symptoms of it then, surely it’s hard for you. The doctor will refer you a specialist or a neurosurgeon. The patient will be treated by the team of health care professionals. There are many treatment options for surgery depending upon type and stages. This is the most common treatment for brain tumors. This is not a contagious disease and cannot spread from one person to other. You may suffer from headache or inconvenience during first few days of surgery. Tumors may be defined in: benign and malignant. Benign does not contain cancer cells, whereas malignant contains cancer cells. After surgery regular follow-up is very important to make sure that the tumor has returned or not.

India is one of the most desirable places to get your neurosurgery done. Not only will you get the cheaper (normally 70% off US or Europe price) brain tumor surgery in India, but also you will have a chance to visit India, one of the most beautiful countries. Many of India’s hospitals and clinics offer international-standard brain surgery at local prices, no waiting list and a high quality holiday. India is a land of art and culture and it is always seemed that abroad people are always attracted to it because of its variety. Medical tourism companies are achieving a great height just because of those people who are coming here to get the brain tumor surgery in India at a fraction of cost. And they are enjoying the facilities too provided by Indian health care facilities.

Symptoms of brain tumors vary from person to person. It depends on tumor size, shape and location. Symptoms often are caused by damage to vital tissue and pressure on the brain as the tumor grows within the limited space in the skull. They may be caused by swelling and a buildup of fluid around the tumor, a condition called edema. Symptoms also may be due to hydrocephalus, which occurs when the tumor blocks the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and causes a build-up in the ventricles. If a brain tumor grows very slowly, its symptoms may not appear for some time.
Some of the most frequent symptoms include:

Headache-Headache is basic symptom of brain tumor. Typical brain tumor headaches reach to worst condition in the morning. It improves slowly and gradually during the day. If the patient vomits he may feel better. These headaches may worsen with coughing, exercise, or with a change in position such as bending or kneeling. Patients also do not typically respond to the usual headache remedies.

Vision problem- 25% of brain tumor patients complain of vision problem. If you have blur vision added with ear problem it may be the cause of brain tumor. If this symptom is associated with you, you may suddenly visit the doctor.

Seizures- About one-third of people diagnosed with a brain tumor do not aware they have a tumor until they have a seizure. This is a very common symptom of brain tumor. It is caused by a disruption in normal flow of electricity to the brain. This may cause unusual disruptions and loss of consciousness. Focal seizures such as muscle twitching or jerking of an arm or leg, abnormal smells or tastes, problems with speech or numbness and tingling may also occur.

Change in mental condition and personality-A person having brain tumor may face some problem like changes in behavior, temperature and also with personality. These changes can be caused by the tumor itself, by increased pressure within the skull caused by the presence of the tumor, or by involvement of the parts of the brain that control personality and most of these symptoms can also be found in people who do NOT have brain tumors. Therefore, the only sure way to tell if you have a brain tumor or not is to see your doctor and get a brain scan. Green Tea Health Benefits – Unlocking an Ancient Secret

Edit Article |

Posted: Jul 21, 2009 |Comments: 0

Green tea has skyrocketed to fame lately due to findings that they are abundant in antioxidants. In fact, compared to its more popular, stronger, and more aromatic cousin, the black tea, green tea is said to be more gifted with antioxidants and hence is a more healthy beverage.

First of all, what are antioxidants and how are they helpful to the human body? An antioxidant is actually a molecule that can slow down the oxidation process. Do you wonder why a banana, an apple, or most white fruits turn brown when their skin is peeled off? That’s what we call oxidation.

Oxidation is just a stepping stone to the damaging process. What actually damages cells are free radicals, which are produced during oxidation. Free radicals are constantly present in the human body. However, their numbers can increase substantially when your body is constantly exposed to toxins from nicotine, alcohol, ultraviolet rays, and other forms of pollution.

In green tea, the main antioxidant is polyphenol. Polyphenol can neutralize free radicals and can thus reduce the body’s susceptibility to health problems. Through antioxidants like polyphenol, the cells become less vulnerable to damage. Because of this, aging can be slowed down.

This is probably the main reason why many Chinese people have reached very advanced ages. The health benefits of green tea have been known to Chinese scholars since the ancient times. That is why tea is among their most prized products. Japan, India, and Thailand, which are all in close proximity to China, all have a long history of tea drinking.

It is possible that these countries have discovered the green tea health benefits on their own. Either that, or they might have adopted the knowledge from nearby China. Practitioners in these countries have used green tea as a stimulant, astringent, and as a treatment for flatulence.

One green tea health benefit that has not been proven but is being thoroughly studied is the possibility of it being able to prevent cancer. Although finding that cancer rates are much lower in Japan, where tea consumption is among if not the highest, cannot be enough basis to ascertain the speculation, it won’t hurt to take in more tea either.

The Health Benefits Of Meditation

The STRESS of Daily Living

So, Why Meditate? In order to talk in-depth about meditation, we first need to talk about stress. In today’s world, we’re constantly having our attention pulled on by family, work, this commitment, that engagement, the other dance recital or soccer game. And for those of us who’ve added the commitment to live a healthy and fit lifestyle to the mix, the demand only compounds. I mean, it’s not like modern culture is encouraging us to eat right and exercise. We have to Intentionally make wellness a part of our day-to-day lives. All these commitments compound upon us over time, often causing us STRESS. the enemy of our lives. Some consider stress to be hands down the #1 killer of mankind today, and experts believe that many of our diseases have their roots firmly planted in it’s deep toxic soil.

What makes stress so dangerous is how our body naturally responds to it. Under intense emotional, physical or psychological pressure, our bodies release a corticosteroidhormone called cortisol. At high levels this hormone causes, high blood pressure and blood sugar, a lowered immune system, hair loss, weight gain, heart disease… shall I continue? The point is simple: Stress bad, very bad.

The good news is stress can be, if not totally removed from our lives, at least managed to the degree that your day can be defined by the good that you’ve experienced in it and not the things that stressed you out. dealing with stress is a skill that must be learned, we humans don’t do it naturally. Animals like the zebra don’t go around in the Serengeti with high blood pressure and receding hairlines, because… well for one, they don’t actually have hairlines, but more importantly because their brains only have two responses as it relates to stress: on and off. So, right after a pride of lions has finished running roughshod all over a zebra heard, the zebra can be seen placidly grazing and even playing and mating with each other. We, on the other hand, thanks to the neocortex, or new brain, (that outer layer that sits atop our reptilian brain), have gradations of stress depending on the situation. We can be a little stressed, moderately stressed, very stressed or “SOMEBODY GIVE ME A GUN!!” stressed. As a result, we can go through an entire twenty-four hour period or more in complete nail-biting mode, not because of a lion attack, but because Sarah told us to get lost, or Jimmy took credit for our work on the job.

Enter Meditation

So, what is meditation and how can it help to reduce stress? Simply put, meditation is the act of returning the attention again and again to a point of focus. This may seem overly simplistic, particularly when I suggest that it can virtually eliminate the negative stress response, but I assure you, both as a six year practitioner and based on the empirical evidence, meditation is the real deal!

There have been literally thousands of scientific studies on the various forms of meditation over the past 40 years that have yielded some interesting findings. Meditation is not the same as deep rest or sleep or daydreaming. It has its own physiological marker and is characterized by high levels of mental alertness, coupled with very low levels of physiological arousal… which means your body is at complete rest, while simultaneously your mind is completely alert. It’s important to get out of your mind the idea that you have to “space out”, or go into a trance in order to meditate properly. However, the mind will naturally descend into alpha, theta and sometimes even delta brain states. Alpha is the mental state we’re in when, say reading a book or studying. Theta is the state our brains are in when we’re asleep and Delta is when we’re in the deepest sleep state.

We also use less oxygen when meditating, in fact, in a whole night’s sleep our oxygen levels never go down as much as they do within 2 minutes of meditation. This causes more blood to flow to our extremities. The point is that Meditation is a physiologically unique state.

Traits Associated With Meditation

Let’s talk a little about meditation and the biomarkers of aging. Studies have found that the contrasting physiological markers of aging between meditators and non meditators are stark. For example, it’s been found that the “real age” (or the actual physiological age of the body) of a meditator is 5 to 12 years younger than that of a non meditator. Other studies have shown improved vision and hearing and lower levels of cancer and heart disease. Also Lowered blood pressure and elevated levels of melatonin characterize the regular practitioner. Essentially, with meditation, you just have less stress and a younger physiology, and really that alone is enough of a reason to begin a daily meditation practice.

How to Meditate

There are two types of meditation practice for you to choose from:
1. Meditation with form
2. Formless meditation

Meditating with form simply means that you choose an object to focus on during your session. You can use an object, such as a candle or maybe an appealing vase. But the “form” isn’t limited to a physical object. The form can be your breath, an emotion like love or compassion. you can focus your attention on your heart. Even thinking on a loved one is okay. The idea here is to find a point of focus.
Formless meditation is actually the opposite of meditation with form. It’s the dissolution of attention, the cessation of thought. This is the more difficult type of meditation and should be practiced after you’ve gotten comfortable with focusing, because that open mental space that characterizes Formless meditation is in itself a form to focus upon and if you can’t focus onsomething, you’ll be unable to focus on nothing.

A Basic Practice

It’s important to wear comfortable clothing so that blood can freely flow and to avoid being distracted by discomfort. choose a quiet place in your home. Ideally you should designate this place as your place to practice. If you do, with time, you will automatically begin to enter into a meditative sate as soon as you go to that place. You may want to purchase a meditation mat and cushion (I got mine from dharmacrafts.comand after six years, it’s still in great condition). If not, a comfortable chair is just fine.
Sit erect in your chair so that your back isn’t touching the chair. Resting back on the chair will cause you to go to sleep because your back muscles will not be engaged. rest your hands, palms up or down, on your lap. Sit up straight. Your spine should be erect and head tilted slightly downward. Ensure that the tip of your tongue is on the roof of your mouth, just behind your buckteeth. You may either close your eyes, or leave them open, holding a “soft” gaze upon the floor a couple of feet in front of you. Now make yourself yawn at least three times. Yawning triggers a relax and focusing response in your brain, getting you in the state of meditation. It’s actually one of the best thing you can do for your brain (For more on this, I recommend the book, “How God Changes Your Brain” by Andrew Newberg, M.D. and Mark Waldman).
Next, inhale slowly through the nose. As you do, notice how the air cools your nostrils as it passes through your nose and travels down the windpipe. Follow the journey your breath takes down to your stomach. Avoid allowing your chest to expand too much. Instead, you want your belly to rise as you breath in. Imagine that the air is filling your stomach and not your lungs. Mentally count this breath as “one”.
Next, gently release your breath into a full exhale, expelling all of the air. exhale until your diaphragm tightens a bit. count this as “two”. Continue the cycle up to ten breaths and then count back to one.
When you get distracted, and you will, start over at one. This is meant to develop your concentration muscles. Once you’re able to count from one ten then back one for two cycles without having to stop, your ready to inquire into more advance forms of meditation.
There are numerous meditation courses that are available today, but if you want to teach yourself to go beyond the basics then I highly recommend purchasing a program called the Integral Life Practice Starter Kit, available at amazon.com.

A Few Tips About Meditating

As a six year practitioner, I’ve been meditating for about as long as I’ve been working out with Beachbody programs, so I learned a long time ago to incorporate them both into a single practice, both for efficiency and for efficacy. As soon as I complete my P90X+ or One on One routine, I immediately down my recovery drink and head for my meditation mat. Studies have found that working out and meditating together has a cross-developmental effect, which simply means that each practice is enhanced by the other (go to integrallife.com for more info on the cross-developmental effects of meditation and weight training).

Don’t feel as though you have to sit for an hour like some enlightened master. Studies show that the health benefits of a daily meditation practice can be realized in as little as 5 to ten minutes. I sit for anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. The sitting time isn’t as important as committing to sitting daily. Sitting everyday for five minutes is much better than sitting once a week for 35 minutes. However, if you get off track, don’t feel guilty, just begin again. It’s not a contest, it’s a life long journey.

It’s important not to beat yourself up over losing focus during meditation. In meditation circles these mental distractions are called “the monkey mind” because your thoughts are constantly popping in and out and back into your head, distracting you from your point of focus. When you allow yourself to become frustrated during your sitting practice, you’re actually sabotaging your efforts. What I do as soon as I become aware that I’m ruminating on unwanted, distracting thoughts (and after six years it still happens all the time) is imagine those thoughts as leaves floating on the surface of a stream. I watch them come and then allow them to gently go, then I return my attention back to my heart, or my breath or an emotion, whatever my point of focus is that day.

When outer distractions occur, like your kid coming in your room looking for something, or your spouse starting the vacuum cleaner just outside your door, or the yard guy whacking weeds outside your window (can you tell that I’ve been there?), you don’t have to let it shut down your session. Remember that you can notice a distraction without being distracted. just patiently wait for the distraction to end and even get excited when they occur because they are wonderful opportunities for you to exercise patience and focus.

The immediate effects of meditation, (e.g. feelings of peace and relaxation) are all well and good, but the “golden” effects of a daily sitting practice are realized over the span of time. The most important benefit that I’ve acquired over time was an elevated level of tolerance to things that , five years ago would have sent me reeling. My threshold for BS has dramatically increased. I liken it to a wall of protection. A levee even. Years ago, my wall was pretty low, so that when stress came along like a raging river it would breach my levees, causing me to flip out. Now, my levees are much higher so that I’m emotionally protected against even a Katrina-sized stressor.

I was pretty excited, when encouraged by a couple of coaches to write this article, because my meditation practice is very important to me. It is, like P90X, a practice that I can point to and be able to say without controversy that it changed my life for the better. And I’m confident that it can do the same for you!

Known and Unusual Benefits of Meditation

Edit Article |

Meditation benefits not only your mind, but also your body and soul. Meditation Benefits It has numerous advantages that would take a whole book to write about. Here I will mention the most important benefits and the most overlooked benefits that meditation provides.

The Most Important Benefits of Meditation

It is very useful to read about meditation benefits if you are still unsure whether you want to start meditating. These benefits will help you decide if meditation can contribute to your well-being and improve other aspects of your life.

1. Meditation improves your focus

One of the greatest meditation benefits is its ability to increase your focus. Once you start meditating, you will be able to effortlessly concentrate on any work you do without getting distracted.

That will make a huge difference in your life as you will significantly increase your productivity. You will be much more successful than the average person who cannot sit still for more than 5 minutes.

2. Meditation makes you aware of your thoughts

During meditation you will need to focus on silence. That means that you will be able to spot your thoughts as soon as they come in. This will give you an opportunity to judge your own thinking. For example, you will be able to check if the majority of your thoughts are positive or negative.

You should not be surprised if you find the latter to be true because negative thinking is almost a default thinking for the majority of people.

3. Meditation reduces stress

Meditation almost instantly reduces stress as soon as you start practising it. This is because during meditation your whole mind is cleansed from negative thoughts. You can sometimes even feel the cleansing process whilst meditating. When you feel energy circling in your head, it means that the intensive cleansing process is taking place. It is a very interesting feeling, I must say:)

So when your mind becomes more pure, you will have less negative thoughts. As a result of this meditation benefit, you will not be suffering from thoughts of worry and fear.

Of course, you will not be able to get rid of all negative thoughts you have (especially if you keep introducing new negative thoughts after meditation). However, if you constantly meditate, your main mental state will remain positive.

4. Meditation develops patience

If you meditate daily, you will remain calm and positive during the times when most people lose patience. For example, waiting in a queue will no longer be of concern to you. When you are stuck in traffic, you will feel as good as when you spend your time at home.

5. Meditation gets you into the state of joy

Another great meditation benefit is that sometimes you will become happy for no reason. Your surroundings will look magical and you will see everything in different colours. Such state of joy will usually last just for a minute or so, but with time this will increase.

Being in the state of joy means that you will see yourself as a very happy person. You will perceive your life to be without any problems. Whilst you are in the state of joy, the positive energy inside you will look for ways to express itself. Therefore you will be able to express it anyway you wish. You may think of doing something creative, pursuing your goals or spending time doing something you really like.

6. Meditation helps you achieve inner peace

One of the meditation benefits is clearing your mind from negativity. Because of that you will become peaceful as there will be less worrisome thoughts left in you. You will notice a huge difference once you develop inner peace. This will feel as stillness inside you. Even if someone tries to upset you or make you angry, you will not give in because you will be strong inside.

External circumstances and events will affect you less because your main concentration will be inside you, rather than outside. You may still get a bit emotional on the outer level, but deep inside you will will remain still and peaceful.

7. Meditation detaches you from negative emotions

During meditation your mind is cleared from useless thoughts. As fewer negative thoughts will be left in your mind, you will experience less negative emotions. This is because all your emotions result from thoughts.

Besides that, even if you still feel negative emotions, they will not affect you greatly. This is because during meditation you will be able to observe your thinking. Once you think about something negative, you will be aware that you had a negative thought. The thought will not have control over you as you will spot it before it could overwhelm you with some emotion.

8. Meditation makes you aware of emotional harm

This is a great meditation benefit. With the practice of meditation you will be able to feel what harm your negative emotions do to your body, mind and soul. This new awareness will make you wonder if you want to get into the negative state again and therefore you will avoid arguments and other harmful situations.

You will also become more sensitive to the energies of other people. You will sense from a distance if a person is angry, upset or happy. That will benefit you greatly because you will know which person is better to be around. By only being with positive people you will avoid being dragged down into low emotional states.

The Most Overlooked Meditation Benefits

These meditation benefits may or may not apply to you.
Meditation Benefits It depends if you are interested in becoming more conscious and aware of the universal laws as well as higher consciousness.

Even if you are not interested in the subjects above, it might be worth reading the rest of the article so that you would not miss out on something beneficial.

1. Meditation makes you connected with the universe

This is an amazing meditation benefit. When you practice meditation, you start feeling connected to everything in this universe. You understand not only human beings, but other forms of life, like animals. I do not mean to say that you will understand their communication methods :) However, you will be able to sense how they feel.

You will feel emotions of animals when you pay close attention to their behaviour. So when an animal is scared, you will feel the fear he has. I find this ability amazing because then you can sense when animals are happy and express compassion when they feel upset.

When you start understanding how they feel, you will look at animals in a different way. You will no longer see them as some external beings that are complete strangers. You will feel connection with them at some level. And that connection is the consciousness that we all have.

Because of this meditation benefit you will understand nature better. You would not tear a leaf off a plant, for example, because you will know that plants can feel the pain.

2. Meditation raises your awareness

Meditation naturally raises your awareness because you start seeing the true colours of life. You see abundance of everything rather than lack, you feel that the world is going into harmony rather than getting deeper into chaos.

You start understanding the truth. Instead of relying on media for information (which is almost always depressing and false), you find all the answers in your consciousness.

3. Through meditation you connect with the universal mind

That is one of the best meditation benefits that I have found. Once you are used to meditation and you have made it into your daily practice, you will experience flow of ideas at some times.

For example, you need to come up with some business idea and but cannot think of anything. All you should do is to ponder on that for a while asking yourself ‘What are the best business ideas I can think of?’

After that just let go of this thought and meditate at normal times. You will notice soon that you start getting business ideas from different sources. You may read a book and some words will catch your attention and you will realise that this is a great topic for your business project. Such idea may come in a form of your thought. Or some friend might introduce some idea that you can apply for your business.

The ways ideas from source can reach you are really unlimited. Just be open to receive them by being aware of what is happening around you.

4. Meditation removes obstacles for manifestations

When you visualise and try to manifest your desires, meditation practice will be of great help.

Meditation eliminates most of your negative thinking. Negative thoughts are nothing more but limited beliefs that you kept reinforcing until they became unconscious. So once you get rid of them, they will not block your desired manifestations from reaching you because there will be no external forces clashing with your positive intention.

5. Meditation raises your vibration

Meditation benefits you immensely in raising your vibration. After you finish meditating, your vibration might fall a bit, but if you practice meditation constantly, your entire vibration will be raised.

When you get into the higher vibration you become vibrational match for positive circumstances and events in your life. This is because by raising vibration you change yourself into more positive, loving, peaceful and happy person.

Meditation is also the first step towards opening up to different frequencies. This can help if you want to experience other dimensions, communicate with spirits or understand the universal mind better. As I did not reach this level (nor am I trying to at this moment), I cannot be more specific as to how exactly this can be achieved.

Conclusion

Meditation is practised by millions of people because it provides numerous advantages that everyone can benefit from. The great thing about meditation is that you do not have to be an expert in meditation to start feeling the benefits it provides.

After a week of meditation you will start seeing and sensing first meditation benefits like reduced stress, inner peace and inner strength. When you keep meditating for longer, you will notice much more benefits including the ones that I have mentioned in this article.

Embracing What Siddhartha Dismissed In Zen

Little is know about the Buddha’s life, as there was no documentation and he spent so much of his time in solitude. But there is an oral tradition, and that seems to be consistent and unchanged over the years. In any case, it is said that the Buddha went through a period of severe asceticism (depicted in images known as “The Fasting Buddha”), only to reject in favor of a set of principles to live by which has come to be known as “The Middle Path.”

We All Enjoy the Benefits Science has Brought but We Don’t Trust the Scientists

There are few aspects of life today have not benefited from the help of Science, which attempts not only to understand but to control nature.

We take it for granted that science is objective – its conclusions tested by independent peers before any conclusion is announced – even the word conclusion is slightly misleading because scientific research is constantly evolving

For every “conclusion” there is often also an equal and opposite “conclusion” – there’s no definitive end point – and it’s therefore understandable that we now take a lot of it with a hefty dose of scepticism.

Perhaps the key is that the research is carried out for human beings by human beings, albeit scientists with training and rigorous methods of testing that try to keep things objective.

A tension arises when different groups clamour for results or solutions to a variety of sometimes conflicting issues.

Agriculture, food production and the environment seem at the moment to be among the main areas of tension.

We as consumers are partly responsible. We want what we call “healthy” food, thousands of us buy vitamins, minerals, pro-biotic drinks and yoghurts, for example, yet we are deeply suspicious of GM technology and we still buy a huge amount of pre-cooked, ready-meals and other “convenience” foods.

If we are sending mixed messages back to the producers and the politicians is it any wonder that we wait ages for action on what are generally held to be urgent issues?

Add in the commercial interests that also seek to influence what we eat, how it’s packaged and how it’s produced and no wonder the topic of food is such a minefield.

The climate change scientists at the centre in the e-mail “hacking scandal” were recently cleared of manipulating data by an inquiry, though its report criticised them for a lack of openness.

However, the whole episode did significant damage to the climate change debate in allowing climate “sceptics” to claim the e-mails showed that UEA scientists had manipulated and suppressed key climate data.

The report of the Independent Climate Change Email Review, also said that public trust in science depended on an inherent culture of honesty, rigour and transparency.

Commentatiors on the result generally anticipate that the effect will be “moves towards opening up research material and data to those the academic community have regarded as outsiders”.

In theory, therefore, we can look forward to yet more information – and yet more confusion – and that not only affects consumers but also agriculture and any new agri-products in development.

Almost regardless of the consumers’ views European politicians have already moved to put severe restrictions on manufacturers’ claims of health benefits on a range of products from cranberry juice (long thought to be helpful in urinary tract infections) to green tea (alleged to help with issues of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, bones and teeth) to probiotic yoghurts, which has particularly affected the makers Danone and Yakult.

On the issue of increasing the amount of food farmers need to produce from the available land – and we, as consumers, want it to be in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way – the picture’s even more muddled.

In the UK and Europe, in contrast to other parts of the world, particularly the USA, consumers and environmental campaigners are very wary of genetically modified crops.

However, Prof John Jones, senior scientist for the Sainsbury Laboratory at the John Innes Centre in Norfolk, UK, in an interesting blog on the BBC website earlier this month (July 2010) argues that this attitude is illogical and there has been no scientific evidence of any harmful effects to humans or land in the 27 years it has been developing.

But so great is the apprehension and resulting safeguarding legislation that only the biggest multinationals can afford development and licensing costs, which means they have a near-monopoly in the marketplace, which he says is not a good thing.

Jones argues that actually genetic modification is only one of the many necessary tools farmers will need to increase yield to feed a growing world population.

The same issues affect Biopesticides Developers, who are devising ever more low-chem pesticides, fungicides and yield enhancers for small and large farmers but facing huge costs and lengthy waits of up to eight years for licensing in European countries.

It seems the scientists will continue to face an uphill struggle in their efforts to provide consumers with the means to have the healthy produce we say we want, while we continue to question the methods they’re devising to meet those requirements.

People are more curious about meditation lately because each day we learn about different benefits of meditation. Although meditation techniques have common benefits, some techniqes can be more beneficial in some cases.

If you are planning to start meditation or just curious if you could really benefit from it; first you need to clarify what you expect from meditation.

We cannot point one technique as the best, but you can choose which is the best for you. Read about different techniques to choose which you can keep on without quitting because some techniques require more time, some needs quidance and some needs tools, so you need to find out which is suitable for you. Consistency will help you to get the best from the meditation technique you choose.

If you want to be sure about the benefits of meditation, here are some scientific researches about different meditation techniques which will be helpfull for beginners.

Mindfulness Meditation Increases Positive Emotional State:

The research team led by Richard Davidson, Vilas Professor of psychology and psychiatry at UW-Madison investigated the positive changes in the brain during and after the meditation.

In the experimental group, participants receieved mindfulness meditation fromJon Kabat-Zinn and the control group didn’t receive training.Meditation group attended a weekly class and they  practised for an hour at home for 6 days a week.

The team measured electrical activity in the frontal part of the brain which is associated with lower anxiety and a more positive emotional state. As expected the meditation group developed more activity at that part of the brain.

Mindfulness Meditation Decreases Perception of Pain and Improves Cognitive Processing:

Fadel Zeidan, a post-doctoral researcher at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and a former doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and co-authors Susan K. Johnson, Zhanna David and Paula Goolkasian from the Department of Psychology at UNC Charlotte, and Bruce J. Diamond from William Patterson University studied if a brief meditation can be helpfull on cognition.

Participants meditated 20 minutes each day for 4 days and control group attempted a reading session at the same period.

Prior to and following the mindfulness meditation and reading sessions, both the meditation and control group were tested to examine  assessing mood, memory, visual attention, attention processing, and vigilance. Mindfulness meditation improved cognitional skills ten times better of the Mindfulness meditation participants after training than the control group.

“This seems to be strong evidence for the idea that we may be able to modify our own minds to improve our cognitive processing — most importantly in the ability to sustain attention and vigilance — within a week’s time.”explained Zeidan.

Through this research the meditation and control group participants’ sensitivity to pain also examined before and after the sesssions by employing harmless electrical shocks Meditation decreased the perception of “high pain” levels, and also reduced the perception of “low” pain levels

“We knew already that meditation has significant effects on pain perception in long-term practitioners whose brains seem to have been completely changed — we didn’t know that you could do this in just three days, with just 20 minutes a day,” Zeidan said.

Buddhist Meditation Improves Visiopatial Abilities:

The researchers led by psychologist Maria Kozhevnikov of George Mason University focused on two types of buddhist meditation Deity Yoga and Open Presence to find out if meditation improves our imagery skills.

In the experiment Deity Yoga and Open Presence practitioners meditated for 20 minutes and the control group rested at the same period. Participants tested before and after sessions about mental rotation abilities and visual memory.

Before meditation sessions although the participants were practitioners of Deity Yoga or Open Presence their test results were similar to the control group, which means meditation doesn’t have a long lasting affect.

After meditation sessions, the results show that the Deity Yoga parctitioners improved their visiopatial abilities dramatically.

Buddhist Insight Meditation Increases Grey Matter In The Brain:

The research led by Sara Lazar, assistant in psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author of the study Jeremy Gray, assistant professor of psychology at Yale  studied to find out if meditation increased the grey matter in the brain.

Gray said. “The study participants were people with jobs and families. They just meditated on average 40 minutes each day, you don’t have to be a monk.”

Magnetic resonance imaging  proved that practising meditation regularly helps to increase the sensory, auditory and visual abilities and internal perception and also reduction of aging effects of brain.

They mentioned that different kinds of meditation may have different affects on cortical thickening.

Yoga Has a Positive Effect on Mood:

A study led by lead author Chris Streeter, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at BUSM examined if yoga has a positive effect on mood.

One group of participants practiced yoga three times a week for one hour and the control group just walked at the same period. Both were followed for 12 weeks scanning their brains with using magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) imaging. They were also asked to assess their psychological state at several points throughout the study.

“Over time, positive changes in these reports were associated with climbing GABA levels,” said Streeter. Low GABA levels are associated with depression and other widespread anxiety disorders.

Integrative Body-Mind Training (IBMT):Helps to regulate your behaviour through your desires

A team of Chinese researchers led by Yi-Yuan Tang of Dalian University of Technology in collaboration with University of Oregon psychologist Michael I. Posner. and UO psychology professor Mary K. Rothbart focused on IBMT to find out what

Posner, who last fall received a National Medal of Science said:”The importance of our findings relates to the ability to make structural changes in a brain network related to self regulation. The pathway that has the largest change due to IBMT is one that previously was shown to relate to individual differences in the person’s ability to regulate conflict.”

Vipassana meditation

A study by psychology and psychiatry professor Richard Davidson of the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and the Waisman Center and his research group examined whether conscious mental training can affect attention.

Because the attentional resources are limited when two visual signals are shown, people miss the second one much of the time. “The attention momentarily goes off-line. Your attention gets stuck on the first target, then you miss the second one ” Davidson says.

Three months of intensive training in Vipassana meditation, which focuses on reducing mental distraction and improving sensory awareness. improved people’s ability to detect a second target.

“The results of the study show that devoting fewer neural resources to the first target leaves enough left over to attend to another target that follows shortly after it”, Davidson says

Zen Meditation Helps You for Pain Management:

A research by Joshua A. Grant, a doctoral student in the Department of Physiology, co-authored the paper with Pierre Rainville, a professor and researcher at the Université de Montréal and it’s affiliated Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal studied on Zen meditation to find out its effects on pain.

“Through training, Zen meditators appear to thicken certain areas of their cortex and this appears to be underlie their lower sensitivity to pain,” says lead author Joshua A. Grant and noted that meditative practices could be helpful in general for pain management, for preventing normal age-related grey matter reductions or potentially for any condition where the grey matter is compromised such as stroke.

Zen Meditation Helps to Clear the Mind Faster After Distruction

Researcher Giuseppe Pagnoni, PhD, Emory assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and co-workers at Emory University School of Medicine studied how interruption affect the thoughts of meditators.

There were two group of participants, one group was Zen practitioners and the other one was control group. Participants brain was scanned during the task with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants was distracted during meditation.

Zen practitioners brain turn back to baseline before distruction faster than the control group.

This suggests that the regular practice of meditation may enhance the capacity to limit the influence of distracting thoughts. This skill could be important in conditions such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder and major depression, characterized by excessive rumination or an abnormal production of task-unrelated thoughts,” Pagnoni says.
