I’m not sure what it is like in your state – but in most you don’t drive during that course or before getting your permit. Usually the course is a classroom setting that covers the laws and rules of the road. Some things like right-of-way, yielding, what different street signs mean, etc.

They often also have a “don’t drink and drive” presentation, and some photos of the results of accidents so you get an idea why it is important to be a safe and responsible driver.

You will get proof that you took the course.

Now study your state’s driver’s manual on your own for a while to get ready for the permit exam.

Usually the permit exam is just a computer based or written test and an eye test. Still no driving.

Take the proof that you took the course to motor vehicles when you think you can pass the written exam.

If all goes well, now you have a permit. Practice driving with an adult licensed driver until you are 16 and ready to take your test for your driver’s license.

For the driver’s license you will most likely have to pass a more extensive computer based or written question test and an actual driving test taken behind the wheel.

Good Luck! Hope this helps.
