Assume we can correct the genetic defect by hybridizing a section of our genome (in our sex cells) with a species of bat.

The progeny are completely human except they are all legally blind.

extinction or genetic modification? neither are necessary. It’s possible to create new life by doing things like cloning or invitro fertilization, but I’ll play along. I would go with the gene modification. Humanity will adapt, as it always has.
