Question by Jon: How long should a magic act be time wise?
Right now, I’m making a magic act I’ll be performing at children’s birthday parties or dinner parties. It’s about 8 tricks long, and I’m expecting it to be 25-30 minutes long when I practice it. I don’t want it to be too long so that the audience gets bored, but I don’t want it to be too short so that the audience doesn’t get enough magic. How long do you think a magic act should be time wise?

actually, i think 25 – 30 minutes is perfect.
when the audience gets bored, it`s not the magic act is too long. it`s just because they`re not interested. a good thing to do is to have audience interaction so they`ll get to participate. good luck!

I think you should definitely trim down your act.
Children are the hardest people to perform for, since their attention span is so short.
You haven’t specified just how old the kids will be, but if they’re around or under 12 years old, they will be running around the whole place by the time you get to your 4th trick.
Another very important thing is to pick out which tricks to perform.
Little kids hate complicated. They really like short, visual tricks. Sponge Ball routines are arguably the best tricks to perform for kids. You can keep a group of children entertained for 10 minutes just with the old “put a ball in each hand, and voila, they both appear in one hand” trick. I assure you that as long as you don’t get caught, every single child will ask you to make both sponge balls appear in their hand.
You definitely want to take out all of those minute-long card tricks. Stick to the short ones. For example, maybe the one where the card appears crumbled in your mouth, or the disappearing card trick.
Remember, kids love visual tricks, and interacting with you. So they won’t really enjoy watching you make the card appear on the top of the deck over and over again.
