Question by luvbabysky: How can I start a foundation to raise awareness of Domestic Violence?
My friend and I, who are both survivors of abuse, would like to start a foundation to raise awareness and we would really like to give talks at high schools, colleges, etc. Not sure where to start though, so doing some research online and wondering if anyone here on YA has any knowledge or advice on how to begin?? Thanks:)

You could start by volunteering your time and help out at abused women’s shelters.

Are you two rich? Foundations typically run on old family money that is carefully invested, sometimes on funds that are donated. Like the other answer, start with volunteering, network through social services and non-profits, you could call the social workers at high schools and see if they’d be interested in such a talk.
Sharing your stories in an open, honest, and accepting way (that is, as you tell it, the story should be free of self-pity, hate, exaggerations, etc.) is one of the best things you can do. If you are at the point where you can comfortably speak about it, I think you’ve got a good idea.
Think about participating in events like “Take Back the Night” or volunteering in a way that doesn’t necessarily mean sharing your story, but provide support for women/others who are in the midst of abuse.
