Awareness of all is essential to life. I can’t be aware of myself if I am not aware of others. Unless I am living in my own private Idaho.

Through truly knowing yourself, you know everything.
one cannot know others until one knows oneself. so i guess slef awareness is better, because it leads to awareness of others.
“Awareness” of others over one’s self is Compte’s “altruism.”
“Altruism: (Alter: other) In general, the cult of benevolence; the opposite of Egoism (q.v.). Term coined by Comte and adopted in Britain by H. Spencer.
1. For Comte Altruism meant the discipline and eradication of self-centered desire, and a life devoted to the good of others; more particularly, selfless love and devotion to Society. In brief, it involved the self-abnegat[ion]…” [1]
“Your self is your mind; renounce it and you become a chunk of meat ready for any cannibal to swallow.”
“Do not confuse altruism with kindness, good will or respect for the rights of others. These are not primaries, but consequences, which, in fact, altruism makes impossible. The irreducible primary of altruism, the basic absolute, is self-sacrifice—which means; self-immolation, self-abnegation, self-denial, self-destruction—which means: the self as a standard of evil, the selfless as a standard of the good. [2]
Since altruism is the opposite of egoism according to the philosopher who coined the term, then egoism is rational. The most rational kind is not “ethical” egoism, but “rational” egoism. http://www.iep.utm.edu/e/egoism.htm
I believe you need to be aware of where you fit into the importance of what is happening around you
