In other words, is it becoming cliche, over used and used to cover up some poor photography?

It’s either that or people simply haven’t learned how to use their White Balance controls, and have decided to make it cool to have some weird color cast.
Reminds me of the trend toward really fat looking noses and chubby cheeks caused by the my space self picturing crowd.

I think that any stylistic thing like selective color, color negative, and cross processing has the potential to either create drama and complexity in a photograph, or make obvious the ineptitude of the artist.
the difference lies in subtlety.
A good photographer will use these tools to enhance the quality of a good image to create a great image. by carefully working and making sure the final look isn’t “overdone,” especially with cross processing, where it’s much easier to get an exterme look than a quiet-retro look.
A bad photographer doesn’t have enough control over the tools to create the image they want, and instead the look is tacky and uninspired.

I’m not really sure what faux cross processing is, but from my googling of it, I think i do that. Hah, i learned something today. It may be overused, but i love how it makes my photographs look so different, kinda like surreal?
I think it’s becoming another fad in photography, just like fish eye portraits, batch processing black and white digital images, handheld above the subject portraits, and yes selective coloring. Like the others I mentioned, cross processing will become misused and thus create meaningless, redundant images worth little in terms of cultural value. Used well, however, this effect, and the others will continue to provide a valuable expressive tool.

I suppose it’s understandable that people get excited by new trends, and that those with a smaller repertoire of skills and effects available to them will be dazzled by a fad.
I guess it’s when people stop being interested that we really have to worry.
Yes it is, but doesn’t mean I won’t use it anymore. How many people can actually cross process film??
