Question by cap10hook72: How do you paint a room to resemble an old-world, fresco style?
I want to paint a bedroom so that it looks like the tavern in Tortuga in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It looks very old-world, fresco-y, the walls have the appearence of water leakage (it looks like water damage or some other thing is dripping down the walls). The base color is like a yellow-brown, and I’ve seen some houses that have had this treatment. Any help on this matter is GREATLY appreciated! If you have questions, feel free to ask. cap10hook72(at symbol)yahoo.com

it is not how you paint it but what you put in it.

I would goto Home Depot, or maybe even Lowe’s. Check out their paint department. They give classes on how to use paint to achieve different looking textures. I’m sure their are also several books you could buy at a bookstore that give instructions and design ideas.
I have seen something similar on HGTV were they painted the walls a rich golden buttery color and later went back with this deep maroon glaze over it and section at a time, covered it with saran wrap (with wrinkles all in it) and pulled it off quick to resemble that. They also had a show on making the ‘damaged’ areas too. look it up on HGTV. I hope this helps……..
I know this isn’t exactly what you asked for, but have you been to a wallpaper store lately? What you are wanting to achieve is a faux finish and if you have the time, dedication and natural ability you will in a few weeks, months or years be able to create the perfect look. Just like the highly paid very experienced set painters did on the movie. On the other hand you could take a page from the TV set designers book and get a digitally reproduced copy of a world class faux finish, a.k.a. wallpaper. If you haven’t looked at a full service wallpaper store you are in for an awakening. There are literally thousands of fantastic faux finish patterns available. I have a pattern in my store that has the illusion of bricks peeking out of a crumbling plaster wall. With a little; practice, patience, time and money you can have a totally awesome room! Luck to ya.
that’s called a venetian plaster finish. very easy to do bc it’s not perfect. spread plaster over the wall with a big spreader in random strokes and let it dry. then you add glaze to your paint colour and paint away. if you want that two tone look, do the first coat in the yellow, second coat in the brown (easy on the brown, you don’t want to completely cover the yellow). during the painting process for each coat, use a clean dry cloth to “rub” the paint into the wall. the glaze makes the paint take longer to dry and easier to work with. play around with it till you like the look. the plaster and the glaze should be at your local hardware store. have fun!
