Question by Stella: Historical Fiction Set in Ancient Rome – Any Recommendations?
I’ve already read Steven Saylor’s entire series so far of Gordianus the Finder, and Lindsey Davis’ entire Marcus Didius Falco mysteries; I loved both these series. I’m looking for another series along these lines.
They don’t have to be mysteries, but I’m not interested in anything that’s heavily battle or military-oriented. I’m more interested in great characters and storylines in the setting of ancient Rome (Pagan eras only please).

Eh, I dunno about the era, but Nobody’s Princess was kinda cute. It’s set in Sparta. Sorry, I suck at history and stuff. It’s about Helen of Sparta as a kid.

Have you read Homer’s “Iliad” or “Odyssey”? I know this is more Greek than Roman, but their mythology is basically the same just different names.
I recommend “I Claudius” & “Claudius the God” by Robert Graves. It’s a fictional autobiography (in two books) by the Roman emperor Claudius the first. It’s about intrigue & treachery and not about battles and conquests.
Goddess of Yesterday by Caroline B. Cooney is one of my favorites set in that time period, though it’s young adult and more of Greece rather than Rome.
Medicus by Ruth Downie
The King’s Gambit by John Roberts
Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow
Ovid by David Wishart
The Germanicus Mosaic by Rosemary Rowe
