I was swept up in the beauty of Enlightened, the first book in the Little Boy Lost series, from the opening pages. Ms. Barnaby has created rich and wholly believable characters in Brian and Jamie and it is impossible not to fall in love with them almost instantly. Enlightened is a beautifully written, passionate and sometimes heartbreaking introduction to this series and I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment when it becomes available.

Rating:
“Little Boy Lost: Enlightened by J.P. Barnaby provides a subtle and graceful insight into the adolescent gay consciousness of Brian McAllister.
Set in a staunchly anti-homosexual religious community in Alabama, this story of sexual awakening centers on two friends since boyhood, Brian McAllister and Jamie Mayfield, and details their struggle as they gain a heightened awareness of their emerging sexuality.
Little Boy Lost: Enlightened blends together the classic coming of age story with the problems facing gay youth, while also evoking memories and emotions of first love. No matter what your sexual orientation, you will be drawn in by these genuine and relatable characters.
J.P. Barnaby is a favorite author of ours, and we look forward to future books in this series.”

Growing up, finding out who you are, realizing you are different, but having a best friend to walk with you on that journey to self discovery – Bryan and Jamie are there for each other through the unearthing of some new and frightening feelings that are not easily accepted in their small, southern town in Alabama.
I dove into this world, easily falling in love with these characters and found Enlightened impossible to put down. J P Barnaby describes a world that is so familiar to many, even in our so-called age of enlightenment. From the tender moments to the rich conversations, you will find yourself pulled into the genuine world of these two men and fall in love with them.

I am captivated, beguiled, and completely charmed by Brian, Jamie, and (most) of JPB’s characters.
With gentle realizations about themselves and each other and not so gentle revelations about the world in which they live, JPB shows us what it might be like to find yourself young in love in the South while gay. While I often read for romance and maybe a smutty bit more, I appreciate JPB’s commitment to amazing storytelling as well as enlightening not only her characters about the nature of our world but also her readers. She pulls no punches in giving readers deliciously rich stories as well as important knowledge about the restriction of rights afforded to an entire community.
I know the road ahead is sure to be rough for Brian and Jamie, but I can’t help but want to follow them and root for them and anticipate the next segment of their story.
