Question by ♥ℓ๏vεℓyƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ♥: Can stream of consciousness poetry rhyme?
I’ve never seen a stream of consciousness poem rhyme, however, I’m not sure if this is because it is rare, or because it defeats the purpose of “stream of consciousness.”
I’m asking this because I need to write this type of poem and I would really like for it to rhyme; the problem is I don’t know if this is possible.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It could rhyme if you wanted it to, but it /would/ be a bit unusual for a stream-of-consciousness poem to rhyme these days. You’re right – it does defeat the purpose, because people don’t usually think in rhyme. However, if you wanted to give your poetry a twist, then go for it 🙂 You could make the rhyme subtle, this may be more suitable than a straight-forward rhyme. What i mean is, only do half-rhymes or have words rhyme in the middle of lines, not at the end, so the effect overall is more subtle and less conspicuous. Hope this helps 🙂 x
One of the most famous stream-of-consciousness poems ever written, rimes.
In the Darktown section of Ulysses, Leopold Bloom has been drinking, and his mind meanders as he wanders around the red-light areas of Dublin in the dark. He bought a bar of soap earlier in the day, and he has been absentmindedly carrying it around in his pocket all day. Suddenly it begins to sing to him:
We’re a capital couple are Bloom and I;
He brightens the earth, I polish the sky!
There is no special reason why a stream of consciousness poem should avoid rime;- though obviously only a slightly altered consciousness would rime naturally (though this might be because of intoxication, tiredness, fever …. or a dozen other possible reasons).
