Question by Said: Which universities have the best graduate programs in cognitive science?
By “cognitive science”, I mean the interdisciplinary study of how information is represented and transformed in the brain. The disciplines whose overlap I’m particularly interested in are philosophy, (cognitive, developmental and evolutionary) psychology, neuroscience and linguistics. Alternatively, graduate programs in philosophy or psychology that study (interdisciplinarily) how information is represented and transformed in the brain.

Indiana University has such a program. I don’t know how it ranks compared to others. Check the research interests of the faculty to see how they compare with your own.

Question by : What can I do with a degree in Cognitive Neuroscience?
… Or Cognitive Science in general? Are the job prospects and salary good?
@Jordan: Do you recommend it? Are you studying it? What steps do I need to take if I’m about to be a HS senior?

Answer by Jordan Burkland
What can you do? You could explore deeper aspects of others and your person. Gain a greater insight to the truly important questions in life. We are in this wonderful state consciousness, we should utilize it to our best ability.

Oh yeah,
careers

salary

EDIT

I would recommend it along with physics, as they seem to be some of the best games in town in regards to monumental discovery. What are the most important questions in this world today? What constitutes a good life, what difficulties should have our attention foremost, how to reduce suffering, etc. Study in physics might help unlock the seemingly supernatural events like black holes, parallel universes, the mutiverse, time travel, etc. That’s why i would be interested, but its your decision. Do something that you find joy in.

I’m not studying it at the time though but am working my way towards one of these.
I’m not sure what steps you could take exactly besides those that you would when planning to apply to any reputable college. Keep your grades up, take part in extra curricular, perhaps go to community college first to indicate your not a dropout.

According to US News & World Report’s 2010 education rankings, the best Neuroscience/Neurobiology grad schools are:

#1 Harvard
#2 Stanford
#3 Univ of California – San Francisco
#4 Johns Hopkins
#5 MIT
#6 Yale
#7 (tie) Columbia (NY)
#7 (tie) Univ of California – San Diego
#9 Univ of California – Berkeley
#10 (tie) Rockefeller Univ (NY)
#10 (tie) Washington University in St. Louis
