Question by Kris: What’s the best book to read about the mystery of ancient civilizations and alien visitors ?

Best answer:

Answer by SmartAZ
You don’t have to read many pages in history to realize that the sky above the Earth looked very different just a few thousand years ago. You might wonder why the ancients named their god after a planet that most people now can’t even point to. Well, they were quite explicit about that: they didn’t worship a god named for a planet, they worshiped the planet. In ancient days, Jupiter and Saturn dominated the sky.

Here is a scientific investigation of ancient myths and legends, considering stories in hundreds of languages from all over the world and going back to 10,500 BC. It is very long, and it is still in progress.

Here is an outdated introduction with pretty pictures:

And here is a youtube presentation in six parts:

Question by Red: Looking for a good book to read – mystery, romance, colorful and possibly set in ancient Arabia?
I’m looking for a good summer read (or two or five…as many as you can give me)! No postmodern, sad/depressing analysis of the futile rat-race that is life; just high-tailed adventure with colour, love and dashing characters (not just a cheesy romance novel though – I definitely need a plot and some development. I was ideally looking for something set in ancient Arabia, but really, anything historic will do. Thanks so much! :)

I liked “The Walking Drum” by Louis L’Amour. Check out the link, it has some good books in it.

Question by squarecircle: Does anyone know the name of the ancient ocean maps from the 1600′s?
They may have been found by Spanish or Dutch Explorers, seeking routes from the west coast of Africa to the eastern coast of South America…
They may have been called Pir ______?

Answer by Nemtywy
I guess you mean a portolan. These were maps used mainly by sailors. They have distinctive wind roses on them, which give compass bearings and sailing instructions. The first known portolan map, the Carte Pisano, was made about 1275. Typically, these maps focus on the seas, ports, coves, and sailing distances, not the interior features of land because they are designed primarily for sea navigation.

Question by soulsearcher: Why did ancient religions believe in creation?
It seems that human instinct forces us to believe in an ex-nihilo creation. Prior to the big bang theory why would someone accept such a concept? It seems obvious from a human perspective that the world was always here.

Was there a religion that believed there was electricity? Did any religion believe in atomic energy? These innovations took humanity by surprise. We never dreamt they existed. Isn’t it ironic that an advanced discovery like the big bang was assumed as fact for thousands of year?

Best answer:

Answer by Rabbi Schlomo Schlomberg
I disagree… From our human perspective, everything that exists seems to have a cause. And that cause in turn had some other preceding cause. And so on… By this logic, you either end up with the infinite series of causes, or the idea of the First Cause.

The First Cause is more conducive to our human psychology, and it’s found not just in religion but also in science.

Question by : Ancient legends that you know?
Hey guys. Do you know any good legends about your city? Or just some weird stories that still remain a mystery? Or maybe such a strange story happened to you? Please share your stories

Best answer:

Answer by AlexIsMyName
Bloody Mary is an Unsolved legend. Any legends about my city…Nope. A strange story thts happened to me… Yes. I Was walking at night and all of a sudden I heard screams behind me so I turned around nothing was there so I decided to follow the screams. It led to an alley and I saw this young girl in a prom dress. I asked her wats wrong.. And she didn’t respond. I kept on asking her and I even yelled at her. No response. So then I decided to shake her shoulder but when I was about to… I noticed something strange about the girls face. And her smell. And her dress. Her dress looked old fashioned and her face seemed familiar. She then faced me and screamed this blood curdling scream. I just ran back to my house yelling for my mum. XD I was 15 at the time. Either way, when my mum told me to go take care of the old lady neighbor since she didn’t hav anyone, I said ok. When I went to her house, I saw the prom girl’s picture on the mantel. I politely asked who the girl was and the lady said,” it was my beautiful baby girl, Annabell. She went to prom but When she was going back home, her boyfriend was drunk and he was driving so there was a horrible accident. At the end she died of blood loss and in one of the most important nights.” I was all like O.O so then I said Srry 4 the loss.

Question by irishumanist: Is the search for REAL answers to life’s mysteries more gratifying than simply blindly accepting ancient dogma
Is there anybody else who feels an absolute joy and sense wonder and fulfillment when learning about the true scientific reasons for the how the universe and everything that is in it came to be ?

Do you feel an immense sense of wonder and amazement when you contemplate the sky at night and marvel at all we have learnt about our orgins and existance and all that there is still to know ?

Finally do you think that this joy and wonder is far superior to simply accepting ancient dogmatic myths as a way of explaining the world around us

Question by wushuboy001: Question about ancient pyramids.?
There is a lot of mystery about pyramids appearing in both Africa and South America and I was having a discussion with a friend.
What is the most likely scenario about the pyramids?
1) Aliens taught the ancients these complex geometic structures around the world.
2) Egyptians canoed back and forth to South America on a regular basis.
3) The pyramid is simply the most intuitive way to pile bricks without them falling over. So simple, even a child would intuitive stack building blocks like that.

I say aliens……
thank you mel, I appreciate your thought out answer.

Niceguy, I cracked up reading what you wrote.
