Question by irishumanist: Is the search for REAL answers to life’s mysteries more gratifying than simply blindly accepting ancient dogma
Is there anybody else who feels an absolute joy and sense wonder and fulfillment when learning about the true scientific reasons for the how the universe and everything that is in it came to be ?

Do you feel an immense sense of wonder and amazement when you contemplate the sky at night and marvel at all we have learnt about our orgins and existance and all that there is still to know ?

Finally do you think that this joy and wonder is far superior to simply accepting ancient dogmatic myths as a way of explaining the world around us

Answer by Thrasymachus
Yeah, science can be a source of wonder and mystery. But so can ancient dogmatic myths. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Unfortunately, some people think that holding a rigidly scientistic (=scientism, not science) worldview is superior to a religious worldview. But in truth it’s just another empty dogma.

Free your mind from the shackles of rationalistic dogma!

  1. God is waiting for your search he created all of it. Go for it .

  2. I get a great feeling of appreciation for aesthetics and creativity
in the world and in my fellow man, wherever I find it.
Both knowing the mechanics of science, and ancient dogma do not enable me to do this.
Reality is basically an agreement. What we agree is real is real.
    There can also be disagreement.
Some things have been more universally agreed upon that others.
Either way there are still viewpoints.
Your’s, the other person or people, and the agreed upon viewpoints that we call REALITY.
(putting the word in caps doesn’t change it’s basic definition, or make one reality superior to another))

  3. I feel that way also. I feel an immense sense of wonder and amazement, about the things you described, except we differ on one part. I think that they point to, and support the fact that there is intelligent design, and specifically, God, and the way the bible states it all came to be. I like to verify it and look over it all, all the time, as I am able. You don’t give a lot of specifics on the dogma you are referring to, or myths, but I am guessing you mean the bible, at least in part. I could be wrong on that though. But yes, the whole of the world, and universe, and life all around us, is just simply fascinating to me.

  4. It sounds like you are in love with knowledge and scientific discoveries. I have felt that way, and ocassionaly, I feel that way about DNA, Retro-photography, cloning, and astrological advancements. Eventually, I found myself asking, “what next”, surely there is a purpose, surely there is more than meets the eyes. Surely, there is an advanced planet far more advanced than us. The Universe is 13.7 Billion years old, Earth is only 4.5 billion years old. If a Planet was formed shortly after the Universe was formed (scientist say yes) then could it have a 9 billion year head start on Earth? Wow! Now that is worth contemplating.
